Neuro-ophthalmology is the specialty dedicated to diseases of the optic nerve and all neurological disorders that affect vision. The eye is often a window to the brain. It is the only place in the anatomy in which we can look at neuronal tissue (the retina). And many diseases that affect the brain have visual manifestations that can help us in the diagnosis or therapeutic management.

For proper diagnosis of these pathologies, specific tests are often required in this specialty that can be performed in the clinic:

    • Electrooculogram (EOG)
    • Electroretinogram (ERG)
    • Visual evoked potentials (VEP)

Other useful explorations in neuro-ophthalmology:

    • visual fields
    • Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
    • Pupils and ocular motility
    • Ocular fundus
